SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETINGS
EVERY VOICE COUNTS!
PURPOSE OF SCHOOL COUNCILS
To improve student achievement and to enhance the accountability
of the education system to parents, through the active participation
of parents.
WHAT ARE SCHOOL COUNCILS?
- School councils act as a link between the school and the
community.
- They provide an opportunity for parents and other members
of the school community to contribute to improving student
achievement and school performance.
- School councils help to build mutual understanding and interaction
between a school and its community.
- They have an advisory role and can make recommendations
to their principals and school boards on any matter.
- School councils maintain a broad focus on the range of issues
of school-wide concern.
WHO ARE THE MEMBERS?
School councils at Secondary schools consist of: parents,
the principal, a teacher, a non-teaching employee, a student,
and a community representative.
REWARDS OF BECOMING A SCHOOL COUNCIL MEMBER:
- Being an important partner in the education system whose
views are valued
- Contributing to the shared goal of improving student achievement
- Having and vehicle through which to express opinions
- Being able to keep informed about what is happening at your
child’s school, the school board and at the provincial
level of education
- An opportunity to make a difference in your child’s
and other children’s education.
YOU ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE!
Whether you choose to join the school council or not, all
Applewood Heights parents and guardians are welcome to attend
school council meetings. The meetings are informal and provide
a good source of information to parents and also an opportunity
to provide your input.
