Dear Applewood Heights parents, guardians, students,
teachers and staff:
Applewood school council had a rewarding 2003-2004 school
year and the following is an overview of the year.
First, I would like to extend a warm invitation to all of
you to attend school council meetings. They are an excellent
way to find out what is happening at our children’s
school. Everyone is welcome to attend meetings.
At our meetings we discuss school events, happenings and
issues, with a school wide perspective on school issues.
The school council acts as a link between the school and
community. The meetings are informal and provide a good
source of information and also an opportunity to provide
your input.
The members of the 2003-2004 school council were:
14 Parent Members: 3 Staff: 2 Students:

Thank you to these dedicated parents, staff and students
for their participation, input and ideas.
We had 7 meetings (September 18, October 16, November 20,
January 15, February 19, April 1 and May 20) with an average
attendance of 13 people.
The council discussed topics including: EQAO, Literacy test
results and planning, staffing, student attendance, community
service hours, exchange programs, student trips, awards,
boundary changes, dress code, volunteerism, new website,
apprenticeship programs, destination planning night, electronic
sign and science labs.
The school council provided input into the school facilities
survey and school success planning, in particular the school
mission statement.
Along with one of our art teachers and students, the school
council saw the completion of Applewood fridge magnets,
which will be supplied, to grade 9 students each year. The
fridge magnets have the school phone number and a space
to write the student’s number. It provides a quick
reference when calling to school.
The school council was also represented at several school
functions including commencement, curriculum night and the
grade 8 parent information night.
The chair participated in the Peel Secondary School Council
Chairs group as co-chair, which was an excellent forum to
share ideas specific to Secondary School issues.
The council sent out a newsletter to parents with the December,
March and June report cards, as well as, the August 2003
information package. The newsletters contained information
about the school council, invited all parents and guardians
to participate and included Applewood student success stories.
On behalf of the Applewood Heights school council, I would
like to thank the support and dedication of all the teachers
and staff at Applewood, as well as the students for making
the school proud.
Sincerely yours,
Mary Bracken, Chair
